Samba Laranja: The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble

Samba Laranja: The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble in the School of Music has developed a partnership with the Nottingham High School World Drumming Ensemble, and the Corcoran High School Afro-Latin Ensemble. Joshua Dekaney, adjunct professsor in the School of Music, attends rehearsals once a week at each high school teaching Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms and songs. The partnership culminats with a mass performance of all three groups together in Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College as well as touring the SU's Samba Laranja to perform in the two high schools. The concerts are open to the SU community, Nottingham and Corcoran students, and parents.

Course Description for the World Drumming class

The World Drumming course is designed to provide students an opportunity to learn, study, create, and perform drumming from various world cultures.

The course focuses on music, drumming, and dance originating from Africa, Brazil, and Latin American.  The course is designed for the non-traditional music student as well as students who do not have previous musical experience.  This is a performance-based class.

Dr. Elisa Dekaney, or Professor Josh Dekaney and/or members of the SU Brazilian Drumming Ensemble lead the World Drumming Class. Students may also have the opportunity to visit SU Brazilian Ensemble during their scheduled class time on the Syracuse University Campus.
